The language of rust, tarnish, warping, cracking, shrinkage and other forms of attrition inspires Yoko Ito to find beauty within imperfection. The Japanese designer behind the brand Individual Sentiments translates the roughness and irregularity of nature into exceptional clothing. For the Fall- Winter 2015 / 2016 season, she developed the concept of yugami, which has a very particular meaning as it refers to something that is altered and distorted but still regular in its way of being wrong. In each piece Yoko intentionally incorporated a deviating element that can be perceived as a defects at first although it’s what gives to the garment its unique personality. Stitches, buttons, pockets, they all featured this sort of “fake mistakes” that own a disturbing yet charming appeal. The idea of a controlled irregularity was further conveyed through asymmetrical closures and destroyed hems, which did not affect the overall sleek proportions of the outfits. By paying meticulous attention to construction methods and materials, the designer scrupulously assembled a special range of fabrics exclusively produced for Individual Sentiments in Japan. The raw and distressed yarns strengthen the idea of an undeclared beauty. Every piece is reinforced with an inner structure that gives it depth and texture, suggesting some kind of misshapen or slightly awkward look that beckoned us to get closer, to touch, to feel.
