In our fast-paced world there are still souls that challenge the culture of speed.
With durability, tradition and comfort as his main creative values, the Belgian designer Jan-Jan Van Essche stays away from the fashion hectiness, pursuing his very own artistic vision. Jan-Jan Van Essche‘s revolutionary approach to clothing evolves from the desire of liberating the human being from the unnecessary constriction of garments, in order to encourage the body’s free movement. Clothes are conceived by Van Essche‘s as second skins in which we have to be able to live and breathe everyday. There are no season nor trends, fabrics and shapes are re-used and re-worked from previous collections in an ongoing process devoted to minimize the patterns as much as possible, featuring an essential number of seams. Jan-Jan Van Essche presents two “project” per year focused on a specific theme, often inspired by one of the designer’s friends or one of his trips. Despite substantial differences in the color palette and in the fabric choice, the garments are made to be timelessy combined with each other. PROJECT#3 – WADADA, meaning LOVE in Iyaric, expresses one of the designer’s fundamental beliefs. This new series came out from several experiments with flax rope weaving, a time-consuming process that gradually evolved in a capsule of pieces with a great tactile appeal. Working on the brand together with his partner Pietro Celestina, the two also run the Atelier Solar Shop in Antwerp, a permanent creative platform for creative minds and a gallery for young artists and designers. The shop’s eclectic and multicultural universe is fully represented in the nomadic and ethnic spirit of Jan-Jan Van Essche‘s garments.
